Google began a global website revolution with the introduction of their Accelerated Mobile-Pages Project. With mobile search already taking over as the leading platform for search, it has become apparent what direction the web needs to take: towards speed and ease of use. Google AMP is definitively the future of search and internet marketing, and thankfully they aren’t that difficult to set up yourself. Here is a quick walk-through on an easy way to setup Accelerated Mobile Pages on your site.
Why You Need Them
While Google doesn’t necessarily factor the existence of AMPs into their ranking algorithms, the benefits provided by them certainly are and can give your site a significant boost. With how things currently look and evaluating the expansion of AMPs over the past year, it is reasonable to assume that they are becoming the new standard. And with any standard, businesses can either decide to take advantage of it or to be left behind. For us, this means a decline in search as mobile users are attracted to your competitors with faster, better-optimized websites and a consecutive loss of potential profits.
Step One: Install the Plugin
WordPress offers a plugin that makes it a snap to get started with Google’s AMP on your website. Once you activate the plugin, every page on your site will have a dynamically generated AMP version of itself. You can test and access this version by simply adding /amp/ to the end of the page’s URL. Note: while we are using a WordPress based website due to its massive popularity as a hosting service, Google offers slightly more complex instructions you can follow to convert a standard HTML page into AMP format here.
Step Two: Use Yoast to Restore Your Look
If you’ve installed the plugin and tested your AMP pages, you may have found that for some reason they appear in a basic black and white format that may not look too great compared to the rest of your website. Don’t worry; this is normal, and we’re going to use Yoast to fix this. Specifically, Yoast’s Glue Plugin. By installing this second plugin, you’ll be able to restore your site (while saving tons of time) by allowing it to carry across all your data and designs from the original page to the newly created AMP version. Once you download and activate the plugin, look for your YoastSEO menu and find the section titled “Google AMP.” From here you will be able to make any necessary changes to how the plugin decides to set up the design of your pages.
Step Three: Wait and Watch Google AMP in Search Console
Congratulations, if you were able to get to step three, you’ve finished the hard work. However, the most important step is what happens next. Moving from non-AMP to AMP on your website is an immediate improvement in many ways, but going through the effort to optimize your domain can be a fruitless endeavor if you aren’t tracking and evaluating its performance and success over time. Keeping an eye on your pages that are performing well and especially the ones that perform the worst allow you to figure out what works best with the traffic that you are bringing it. Over time you will be able to use this data to make necessary tweaks to your pages to work out what your users engage with the most about your business and take advantage of this.
Introducing Google’s AMP into your business is not only a smart choice, but it’s quickly becoming necessary for competing businesses. No one likes to wait for a page to load or to wade through content–they want it quickly and handed to them. Making the right choice can not only help drive traffic to your business but help optimize the way the internet works.
From here it is important to monitor Search Console. There is a new tab for Google AMP there that is able to monitor errors and critical errors to ensure everything is on the right path.
